Home Program Platform BUSAN2023 Program

Platform BUSAN is the joint networking platform for emerging Asian independent filmmakers. Platform BUSAN provides various content and sessions, promoting Busan as a hub for new Asian independent filmmakers to provide them with opportunities to collaborate and build networks.

Organized by Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) and Asian Contents & Film Market (ACFM), 2023 Platform BUSAN was held from 7-10 October 2023. This year, Platform BUSAN hosted 10 programs including master classes, seminars, case studies, and networking events. A total of 115 participants from 24 countries actively shared their artistic philosophies and field experiences, making the event a significant milestone for emerging Asian filmmakers.

DAY1 Sat, 7	10:00 – 11:30	Film Fund Talk The Film Fund Talk seeks to give practical information to listeners who wish to get financing and support for their productions. Representatives of major film funds will participate as panelists and introduce their fund initiatives to emerging filmmakers. During this talk, the participants could get information on how to apply for each fund and the range of support each fund can provide. 	16:00 – 17:30	Filmmaker's Talk: Mohsen MAKHMALBAF Mohsen Makhmalbaf is an Iranian film director most well-known for The Cyclist (Bicycleran) (1987), Time of Love (1990), Kandahar (2001), and The President (2014). At the 28th BUSAN International Film Festival, he is set to present his compilation film Talking with Rivers (2023). As film director, editor, producer, writer, and educator, he will share his broad experience and philosophy with the listeners. 	11:00 – 12:00	Co-production Case Study: Plan75 by VIPO In the inaugural collaboration program between Platform Busan and VIPO, the featured case study is on the co-production of PLAN75 which premiered at last year’s Cannes Film Festival and won the Camera d'Or Special Mention, and then screened atBusan International Film Festival 2022. The main co-producers from Japan Eiko Mizuno-Gray and Jason Gray will talk about how they worked together with three other countries and its success led to Japan's representation for Best International Film at the 2023 Academy Awards. 	16:00 – 17:30	Finding the Oasis of Now for International Co-production by mylab International co-production is the holy grail for many filmmakers and producers wanting to enable their films to be made. Yet, the process of international co-production is never straightforward; it entails a lot of communication and trust to keep going when the going gets tough. We explore the journey of Malaysian director, Chia Chee Sum with his producers, Lee Yve Vonn and Fran Borgia on how they navigated through the various labs, project markets, pandemic and more to get the film to New Currents competition in Busan. DAY3 Mon, 9	10:30 – 12:00	Filmmaker's Talk: OGIGAMI Naoko As a director and writer representing Japan, Ogigami Naoko has built her own style of filmmaking through films the likes of Yoshino's Barber Shop (2004), Kamome Diner (2006), Rent-a-Cat (2012), and Riverside Mukolitta (2021). Coming back to BIFF with her newest film Ripples (2023), she will share her filmmaking philosophy with the emerging filmmakers at Platform BUSAN. 	14:00 – 15:00	Cinematic Crossroads: Navigating European and Asian Film Markets by TTB & EFP In this engaging panel curated by Katarzyna Siniarska, sales agent and co-president of Europa International, we bring together a select group of top-tier European and Asian distributors. These industry leaders will engage in an unfiltered and insightful discussion on the challenges and opportunities encountered while introducing Asian art-house and commercial films to European audiences, and vice versa. With a focus on the evolving post-pandemic landscape, they will share their experiences, acquisition strategies, and insights that shape their theatrical distribution campaigns. DAY4 Tue, 10	14:30 – 15:30	Sound Design and Post-Production The free association of images and sounds is the starting point of sound design in cinema, the creation of an enriching tension for each film. Subjective and objective listening point, sound transitions, framing and spatial relationship, Sound design begins by creating a distance between what we see and what we hear.
