The past few years, the film industry in Vietnam is experiencing an exciting chapter beyond mere good fortunes. A handful of films are making waves internationally alongside the surge in local audiences and box office, thus enabling Vietnam to be one of the most vibrant film industries in Asia - yet challenges rooted in a myriad socio-political landscape remain. This case study will feature two Vietnamese features, Viet and Nam by Trương Minh Quý & Don't Cry, Butterfly by Duong Dieu Linh to excavate the past, present and future of stories from Vietnam.

Lorna TEE (Producer & Curator, mylab)

Lorna Tee is a film producer & curator, dividing her time between Asia & Europe. She’s producing with her Malaysian company Paperheart, and with Amsterdam-based company, An Original Picture, focusing on films made for an international audience. She is currently the curator of a film incubation lab in Asia, mylab and is the international acquisitions advisor for Barunson E&A (South Korea). In addition, she is working with various Asian film agencies on bringing greater regional collaboration and cooperation.

Bradley LIEW (Producer, Viet and Nam)

Bradley Liew is the CEO of Manila based Epicmedia Productions Inc. He has produced a trio of Lav Diaz’s films, including the anti-musical Season of the Devil (Berlinale Competition), his 16mm film-noir When the Waves Are Gone (Venice Out of Competition), and Essential Truths of the Lake (Locarno Competition); as well as Kenneth Dagatan’s Sundance Midnight Section’s In My Mother’s Skin, which was sold to Amazon. In 2024, his films include Cu Li Never Cries by Pham Ngoc Lan (Berlinale Best First Feature), Directors Factory Philippines (Cannes Directors' Fortnight), Viet and Nam by Truong Minh Quy (Cannes Un Certain Regard) and Electric Child by Simon Jaquemet (Locarno Piazza Grande).

Bianca BALBUENA (Producer, Viet and Nam)

Bianca Balbuena is a producer, educator and co-founder of Epicmedia, which has produced Cannes Un Certain Regard’s Viet and Nam, Berlinale Silver Bear A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery, Venice Lion of the Future Engkwentro and the first Filipino film at the Sundance Film Festival Midnight In My Mother’s Skin. She is the recipient of the Asian Film Commissions Network’s Producer of the Year and the Outstanding Achievement Award at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards. She has served as jury at Busan, Karlovy Vary, Sydney, Durban, Seashorts and Fribourg film festivals. She is the European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs Ambassador for Asia.

DUONG Dieu Linh (Director, Don’t Cry, Butterfly)

Duong Dieu Linh is a Vietnamese filmmaker who takes special interest in the unconventional depiction of sad, angsty and naggy middle-aged women. Linh previously attended Berlinale Talents in 2020, Asian Film Academy in 2016, Locarno Summer Academy and Bucheon Fantastic Film School in 2015. Her debut feature, Don’t Cry, Butterfly, participated in Full Circle Lab, Less Is More, Locarno Open Doors Hub, Attagirl, and most recently Hong Kong-Asia Financing Forum (HAF) where it won both the Udine Focus Asia and Wouter Barendretch Award. The film is also supported by the Singapore Film Commission, Purin Pictures and Visions Sud Est.

TAN Si En (Producer, Don’t Cry, Butterfly)

Tan Si En is a film & TV producer and founder of film and TV company – Momo Film Co. Their producing efforts include Nelson Yeo’s Dreaming & Dying, which made its World Premiere and won two prestigious Golden Leopards at the Locarno Film Festival 2023, and Anthony Chen’s Wet Season, which premiered at Toronto International Film Festival 2019 and was Singapore’s Oscars 2021 representative. Their latest co-productions The Year of the Everlasting Storm premiered in Cannes Film Festival, Arnold Is a Model Student by Sorayos Prapapan premiered in Locarno Film Festival, and Andragogy by Wregas Bhanuteja premiered in Toronto.

Yulia Evina BHARA (Producer, Don’t Cry, Butterfly)

Yulia Evina Bhara is the founder of KawanKawan Media, a production company based in Jakarta, Indonesia. Her feature film debut is SOLO, SOLITUDE (Yosep Anggi Noen), premiered in the Locarno’s Filmmaker of the Present. She scored a hat trick of wins at Locarno over the last few years with Yosep Anggi Noen’s The Science of Fictions, Carlo Francisco Manatad’s Whether the Weather Is Fine and Woo Ming Jin’s Stone Turtle. Her latest works include award winning debut features Autobiography (Makbul Mubarak), premiered at Venice Film Festival and Tiger Stripes (Amanda Nell Eu) premiered at Cannes’ Semaine de la Critique.
