Doc Square, newly launched this year at ACFM as a dedicated documentary platform, is set to become a noteworthy venue for discussions within the global documentary scene, particularly across Asia.

To open the three-day journey, the first session brings together documentary film festival programmers and consultants from around the world for a wide-ranging and forward-looking conversation on the current state and future directions of international documentary film festivals.
Moderator
KIM Youngwoo (Program Consultant, Sheffield Docfest)

A festival programmer and selection expert, Kim has long been active in the global film festival arena and served as a member of the selection committee for the Busan International Film Festival until 2019 and for the DMZ DOCS until 2021. He has also worked as a selection consultant and program advisor for numerous international film festivals, including the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), the Locarno Film Festival, and the Sheffield Doc/Fest in the UK. Kim has recently worked for Red Sea International Film Festival, the Seoul Independent Film Festival, and the Mise-en-scène Short Film Festival as a programmer.

Basil TSIOKOS (Senior Programmer, Sundance Film Festival)

Basil Tsiokos is a Senior Programmer for the Sundance Film Festival, focusing on nonfiction features. He was previously the longtime Director of Programming for DOC NYC and the Nantucket Film Festival, and before that the Artistic and Executive Director of NewFest. Basil has regularly served on the feature nominations committees for the International Documentary Association's IDA Awards and Cinema Eye Honors. He has written about documentaries since 2010 on what (not) to doc. Basil holds a Masters degree from New York University and two undergraduate degrees from Stanford University.

FUJIOKA Asako (Vice-chairperson, Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival)

Fujioka Asako has worked with the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival since 1993 as Program Coordinator, Director of Tokyo Office, and now Vice-chair of the Board. As head of Documentary Dream Center, she began organizing filmmaking workshops in various Asian destinations since 2009 and launched Yamagata Documentary Dojo, a residency program for independent filmmakers, in 2018. She supports Japanese films liaison internationally, and aims to foster documentary, its makers and audiences through international exchange. She is producer of Nude at Heart (2021) and other documentaries.

Gugi GUMILANG (International Film Programmer, Hot Docs)

Gugi is a dedicated documentary professional, championing bold stories that resonate worldwide. His producing credits include premieres at Hot Docs, Locarno, DOK Leipzig, and Hong Kong International Film Festival. As Programme Director of the award-winning In-Docs, he leads Docs by the Sea, amplifying Asian voices. Serving on the Documentary Association of Europe Executive Board and as a Hot Docs International Programmer, he mentors talents, advises on storytelling, and champions fair co-productions. His curatorial and jury work spans Sundance Documentary Fund, IDFA Bertha Fund, Chicken & Egg Pictures, CPH:DOX, DOK Leipzig, Cannes Docs, IDFA Forum, and Ji.hlava IDFF.

Mads K. MIKKELSEN (Head of Programme, CPH:DOX)

Mads K. Mikkelsen is Head of Programme at CPH:DOX. He runs two public cinema clubs, teaches film history at the Danish Film School, and is a frequent contributor to local and international film magazines, as well as the author of a book about non-fiction cinema. He has been a consultant on numerous international film projects, and is on the selection and nomination committees for several international grants and awards. He has received an award for his programming work from Festival de Cannes - Marché du film and Screen International.
